From March 23rd and 25th, we held a joint retreat with the Grapin-Botton and Scharaw labs at Schloss Ringberg on Lake Tegernsee. It was a truly fantastic experience combining a beautiful venue, excellent food, and an inspiring program full of creative and unconventional sessions. Highlights included interactive grant-pitching workshop and lively speed-dating exchanges that sparked new ideas and potential collaborations. A particularly memorable moments was our hike through a breathtaking landscape of sun and snow: a perfect setting for conversation and reflection. Overall, the retreat was energizing, productive, and a great opportunity to connect across labs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two Teams, Two Challenges, One Escape Night to remember<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last Monday night we celebrated Alice\u2019s time in our lab with a delicious dinner, followed by our very first \u201cGerri Lab Escape Room Adventure\u201d<\/em> in Dresden Neustadt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Split into two teams, we tackled riddles, puzzles, and secret mechanisms\u2014and enjoyed plenty of triumphant moments as hidden doors swung open and locks were cracked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One team braved a haunted house<\/em>, uncovering lost treasures and spine-tingling surprises like moving snakes, a voodoo doll, and cleverly concealed passages. The other team was locked in a lab, racing to brew an antidote for a mysterious virus, cracking chemical formulas, and unlocking hidden secrets to escape before time ran out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had an absolute blast\u2014and happily, everyone made it out just in time!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MPG Labfolder User Workshop 2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MPG Labfolder User Workshop 2025, held on June 5\u20136 at the Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology in Berlin, was a resounding success. With active participation from researchers and support staff across the Max Planck Society\u2014including Michi, who contributed valuable input\u2014the workshop fostered insightful discussions, practical knowledge sharing, and new connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event featured lightning talks on real-world Labfolder use cases, sessions on challenges and best practices, and an open exchange with the Labfolder team (Labforward). The atmosphere was highly collaborative, with plenty of inspiration for improving electronic lab notebook workflows.
Many thanks to the organisers and everyone who took part and helped make this a rewarding experience!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ornella joined the DIPP Predoc Retreat 2025 in Oberwiesenthal, spending a few days talking science, sharing ideas with fellow PhD students, and enjoying the mountain atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ornella took part in the EMBO Workshop \u201cBeyond the Standard: Unconventional Vertebrate Models in Biomedicine\u201d in Edinburgh and had an amazing time! She presented her work on comparative placenta development and had the chance to share ideas and learn about many fascinating, non-conventional species used as model organisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a great opportunity to get inspired, discover new approaches, and celebrate the diversity of models that help us answer important biological questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudia receives GSCN Young Investigator award<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The German Stem Cell Network (GSCN) announced the GSCN Awards 2024. With the GSCN Awards, the German Stem Cell Network recognizes outstanding stem cell researchers on their way to expanding basic research and opening up new avenues for therapeutic options. One of the awardees was Claudia, who received the GCSN 2024 Young Investigator Award!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudia and Ornella attended the Centre of Trophoblast Annual Symposium in Cambridge (UK). This conference was a great opportunity to discuss progress and challenges in trophoblast stem cell and placenta organoid research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudia participated in a panel discussion about \u201cRevisiting criteria for trophoblast stem cells and organoids\u201d with other experts in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudia also presented Johanna\u2019s work and explained the exciting new projects of the lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ornella presented a poster and was selected for a flash talk \u2013 the first one in her PhD journey!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a very stimulating conference to discuss the future of the placenta field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joint lab retreat with the Ebisuya Lab<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had an amazing joint retreat with the lab of Miki Ebisuya<\/a> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gerri and Ebisuya labs are similarly interested in species-specific analysis, even though focused on different developmental processes. It was a great occasion to share our data, receive crucial feedback and discuss about new in vitro models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The retreat took place in Leipzig. We had fantastic activities to get to know each other, such as science speed dating and science meets arts, where we discussed about the diversity of shapes and functions in the animal kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As outing activities, we had a city tour \u201cHaunted Leipzig\u201d and we visited the amazing Leipzig Zoo!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to the organizers for the amazing retreat!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SyStem Vienna 2024<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Claudia and Michi attended SY-Stem 2024 in Vienna (Austria) \u2013 a symposium focusing on the next generation of stem cell researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Claudia participated at the mentoring session in a panel with experts with different career paths, to discuss with students the employment opportunities in academia and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Claudia also gave a talk in the \u201cearly embryogenesis\u201d session showing the first and exciting data developed in the lab and the lab\u2019s future plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

We met with old friends and got to know new scientists. It was a great meeting with stimulating talks, posters and discussion and great fun!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
